Our SunSmart Policy has been developed to encourage all children attending Lalor Primary School to protect themselves from skin damage caused by the harmful ultra-violet rays of the sun. It is to be implemented throughout the year but with particular emphasis in Terms 1 and 4.
Lalor Primary School has a number of large shade cloth shelters and many trees providing shade in the school grounds particularly covering the main areas where our students play.
During Terms 1 and 4 all children are required to wear a school council approved legionnaire or wide brimmed hat when participating in Physical Education lessons, other outdoor teaching sessions, excursions and sporting activities. During transition sessions all enrolled prep students are provided with a FREE school hat to help promote our SunSmart Policy from the beginning of each student’s primary school life. As part of our Occupational Health and Safety and to provide positive role modelling to our students , all staff are required to wear a sun protective hat, covering clothing and, if practical, sunglasses when outside.
Students are encouraged to use available areas of shade for outdoor activities and a whole school 'hot day program' is implemented on days of extreme weather conditions. During our 'hot day program' outside breaks are shortened or breaks occur indoors. During Terms 1 and 4 interschool sport is timetabled for the start of the school day with sports completed by 11.00am. Outdoor activities will be held in shaded areas during warm, sunny weather whenever possible.
Across all grade levels at Lalor Primary School teaching and learning programs focussing on SunSmart behaviour and skin cancer prevention are incorporated into the curriculum. These planned SunSmart activities are linked with AusVELS Strands. SunSmart behaviour is regularly reinforced to students and all community members through positive messages and information in grade level and school newsletters, parent meetings and on our community notice board.
