When faced with remote learning in Prep, with a very multicultural community, how could we communicate with families and support learners at home to be as independent, efficient and successful as possible?
Students are still learning to read, and require visual and verbal information to understand. Parents told us that written information was helpful to them as well so they could use translation apps to support them. We are constantly speaking to parents as well as asking for formal feedback to make sure we were on the right track.
The dream was to have learners and their families fully engaged and actively participating in learning. To have families understand how to best support their child by working with the teachers. To have learners and their families enjoy their Remote Learning time together and feel successful.
We decided to create our own videos that provide visual and verbal information as well as writing. Here is an example of one of our videos
Learners were able to access the videos and watch them as many times as they needed. They were able to pause, rewind and probably fast forward to suit their purposes. Even when students were unable to attend meetings they were able to paticipate in the learning via the videos.
Attendance levels are very high and parents are supporting their children in amazing ways. Some examples of parents questioning and encouraging their children really show a connection to what we are trying to achieve!
Some parents are so inventive and creating their own ways to support their students.
